Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky, the documentary follows seven Ukrainian children whose lives have been changed by Russia’s war against Ukraine — their experiences, friendships, passions and hopes for the future.
Combining documentary footage with animation by Ukrainian artists, the film brings their stories to international audiences. More than 100 Ukrainian artists and film professionals inside war torn Ukraine under the daily heavy bombings,contributed to its creation.
Bring Kids Back UA, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s initiative to return Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, is a partner in the film’s impact campaign alongside the Ukrainian World Congress and War Child International. Together, we are helping bring global attention to Ukrainian children affected by Russia’s war and ensuring their voices are heard.
Ash and Crayons opens in U.S. theaters through Briarcliff Entertainment on November 20, 2026 — World Children’s Day. In Ukrainian cinemas from December 3, 2026.
The film is produced by Kevin Goetz and Galyna Sadomtseva-Nabaranchuk, with support from the Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine and the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
