As part of the President of Ukraine’s Bring Kids Back UA initiative, with the support of the Ukrainian Child Rights Network, a 21-year-old girl returned to Ukraine from the temporarily occupied territory, where she had lived for over 10 years.
When the war began in 2014, Maria was still a child. Her hometown fell under occupation, and she spent her entire adolescence in a reality where freedom was only a dream. She grew up under constant pressure, restrictions, propaganda, and fear. Yet, even in what seemed like a hopeless environment, Maria never stopped dreaming of reaching Ukrainian-controlled territory.
She wanted to pursue an education, find a job, and build a future in a free country. In Kyiv, her uncle was waiting for her, ready to help her start a new life. Leaving the occupied territory was extremely difficult, but thanks to Maria’s determination and the support of specialists, she found a way home.
Today, Maria is finally where she always wanted to be. She has reunited with her relatives, who will help her adapt to her new surroundings. She will also receive psychological and case management support.
